Mount Kilimanjaro: Up the Mountain, Day 1

 Moshi, Tanzania, January 15, 2025

On this day, 20 Hikerbab(i)es left the comforts of their hotel to set off on a journey of a lifetime.

They had trained for this and most of them felt as prepared as they possibly could, none of them knew the adventure that was about to happen before them.

The first day was long, maybe a bit too long. We were all so ready to get headed up the mountain that everything felt like it took an eternity. We met at breakfast at 7:30 am, to be ready to be completely packed and ready to go by 9 am. As a group of 20 women, it sometimes seemed like everything we did took long. But for this, we were ready to go and on time.

Our adventure would start with a one hour bus ride to the start of the Machame Gate, which leads to the Machame Route, which the route we were taking.  From there we would need to sign in (which we would do at every camp we stayed at), eat lunch, greet our guides, and begin our hike through the jungle.

We were all breaking in our hiking legs after long flights and this day was a pretty easy 6 hour hike through the rainforest, where it did indeed rain. This was the first of many times that we would get rained on. Although we were hoping to see some monkeys they were a no-show, but we did so many beautiful plants and trees.

At the end of the day, we reached our first camp-Machame Camp where our porters already had our tents set up and ready for us to select one. My roomate, Gabby, and I chose tent 8 which would become our home away from home for the next 6 days.

Our evenings at camp would include tea time-where we had our choice of tea, drinking chocolate, instant coffee, and a light snack after a long day of hiking. Then around 7:30 we would have a late dinner consisting of soup, rice, meat stew, and veggies. We ate in a communal tent and had a lot of dinner laughs.
